Road Shoes

By Canadian Cycling Magazine - Published June 8, 2010

Getting the power to the pedals requires a road shoe that's stiff and comfortable without being unnecessarily heavy. Here are a few of this season's best options for ensuring all the watts make it to the rear wheel.

    Didora

The SpeedRacer Carbon's fiery red uppers scream high-speed performance. Thankfully, the stiff carbon sole delivers on this shoe's aggressive go-fast looks. Unlike many road shoes, the SpeedRacer Carbon uses a unique mounting plate allowing compatibility with both standard road and SPD mountain bike cleats. An easy-to-use buckle and two Velcro-style straps eliminate unwanted movement during hard sprints while the replaceable heel pad provides traction when walking to the podium.

  • SH-R240 - $400

    Shimano

Shimano's heat-moldable insoles assure the SH-R240 remain comfortable during easy spins or hard sprints. For efficient power transfer, the SH-R240s use a carbon composite sole ensuring maximum energy transfer while the combination of a single oversize micro-adjust buckle and two off-set straps prevent unwanted foot movement during full-out efforts. In the upper, Shimano uses a variety of sophisticated non-stretch textiles for consistent performance during the life of the shoe.

    Bont a-two

With their custom moldable 100 per cent carbon fibre and fibreglass construction, the Bont a-two shoes provide an ultra-efficient power-transfer platform. But unlike many other similarly-stiff road shoes, the a-two's low 4.4 mm stack height ensures a solid wobble-free connection to the pedals. The a-twos are available in a traditional black or white microfiber upper ensuring they look good with almost any cycling kit.
