Calgary study shows 1 in 5 ride bikes

City-commissioned study says 19% of people ride bikes once a week, but more would commute if there were dedicated bike lanes

Results of a new study in Calgary show that a large portion of the population ride bikes at least once a week, but even more would ride to school or work if they felt safer on the roads. A study done by HarGroup Management Consultants, which was commissioned by the city of Calgary, showed 19 per cent of the 750 people surveyed said they currently ride bikes. But 64 per cent of those surveyed said they don’t feel safe when riding in traffic. The study was done as research for the city’s cycling strategy plan that will be presented to council in May.

“There are people out there who would definitely bike more, but the tipping point for them  … of taking on commuting is if specific infrastructure is put into place to make it safer for them to get to and from work,” Michael Gray of local bike advocacy group Bike Calgary, told the Calgary Herald.
