Video: SpiderTech launches 2012 team

By Canadian Cycling Magazine - Published December 2, 2011

Fresh off a successful season in 2011, Team SpiderTech powered by C10 announced its 2012 roster Friday in Toronto.

Team director Steve Bauer has added three new faces to the team, Americans Bjorn Selander and Caleb Fairly, and Swiss rider Raymond Kunzli.

In addition to the new talent, SpiderTech will be led by returning Canadians Will Routley and Guillame Boivin and David Boily.

Selander competed for Team RadioShack and rode in the Giro d’Italia as well as Paris-Robaix in 2011. Fairly also has some high-profile experience, as he rode with Team HTC Highroad. Their presence combined with some of Canada’s top cyclists could propel Team SpiderTech to a 2013 entry in the Tour de France.

In 2011, SpiderTech had 30 podium finishes, eight UCI victories and 60 top-10 finishes in 130 days of racing. Bauer said despite losing team leader top rider Svein Tuft, SpiderTech will be even stronger in 2012 since everyone is healthy.

“The success we had as a team in 2011 proved to ourselves and to any skeptics that a Canadian team can race and compete with the best teams and individual riders in the world,” Bauer said.

The team heads to Europe in early January for a training camp, with the first races later that month. The full 2012 schedule will be released in the new year.
