After taking both the men’s and women’s titles of the Jayco Bay Cycling Classic two weeks ago, new Australian team GreenEdge, which jumped right into ProTour status, has another victory with Simon Gerrans hanging on to the GC win at the Santos Tour Down Under. This is Gerrans’ second TDU title, having won it with AG2R in 2006.

German Andre Greipel (Lotto-Belisol), a double winner himself in 2008 and 2010, took his third stage win on the last day, a criterium through the streets of Adelaide.

GreenEdge has hit the ground running this season. A squad made up of Aussie vets and youngsters, alongside experienced internationals including Canadians Svein Tuft and Christain Meier, GreenEdge is a powerful team that races with elan. And they’ve won the first UCI WorldTour event.

Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) hangs onto second place after his dramatic comeback victory on Old Willunga Hill. Equal on time with Gerrans, he came runner up because a countback of stage placings gave the advantage to Gerrans. Radioshack-Nissan’s Tiago Machado of Portugal rounds out the podium. Both the mountains and young rider jersey went to the surprising Rohan Dennis of Australian team UNI-SA.
