Torontonians can ride two by two

Old bylaw requiring cyclists to ride single file off the books

Single file folks, unless you're ready for that fine.

On Tuesday, Toronto city council’s public works committee voted to eliminate a bylaw that required cyclists to ride single file. The decision will most likely be finalized at the meeting in April. The vote was unanimous.

The bylaw, which originated in the city of Etobicoke and ended up in the City of Toronto’s books after amalgamation, was enacted by city council last year. While it hadn’t yet been enforced by police, cyclists part of the Morning Glory Cycling Club had received warnings in 2012 during some of their group rides. In February, councillor Karen Stintz filed a motion to repeal the bylaw.

Regarding the bylaw, Morning Glory president Fraser Chapman said the following to the Toronto Star:

Being pulled over at quarter-to-six in the morning, and spending 20 minutes to 30 minutes on the side of the road, is not exactly what you’re trying to do when you’re trying to get your workout in.
