Tuesday afternoon, the Canadian track cycling team arrived ready to race in the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games.

Raphaël Gagné wins men’s cross country race of the 2015 Pan Am Games

Raphaël Gagné won the gold medal at the men’s mountain bike race at the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games. Gagné has dramatically improved his performances this season and the Pan Am victory is a new career high for the rider from Quebec City. Gagné finished the six lap, 31.2-km race in a time of one hour, 31 minutes, 14 seconds.

Canadian Emily Batty raced to gold in the women’s cross country mountain bike race at the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games in front of a home crowd on Sunday. Batty has raced many times at Hardwood Hills—the venue for the competition—and was buoyed by legions of fans as she raced the five laps of the event.

After many years of trying, Catharine Pendrel secured a career-first victory at the Sea Otter Classic cross country race this weekend. Pendrel and fellow Canadian Emily Batty entered the race as the top two riders in the UCI points ranking–Pendrel in her world champion jersey, Batty in the U.S. Cup leader’s jersey.

$20,000 grant means new trail build in Durham region

The Durham Mountain Bike Association has secured funding to build a 12-km addition to the existing trail network northeast of Toronto. Thanks to a $20,000 grant from Trails Canada and matched funds from the club’s reserves, riders in the Durham Forest and Three Rocks area should be able to check out the new singletrack by the end of August.

Keep your bike running through the winter

Riding a bicycle in through snow, slush and road salt can take its toll on your bike. But, with a little extra preparation you can keep your bike rolling throughout the winter. You must be diligent with keeping your bike clean during the winter. Some people advocate cleaning after every ride, and it’s a good idea to at least wipe off any snow, ice and salt kicked up while outside. There is very little that can be done to mitigate the need for cleaning, but there are ways to prepare the bike to handle a winter of riding.

Entering competition as a reigning champion isn’t new for Catharine Pendrel. Last month, Pendrel won her second mountain bike world championship title, matching the number of World Cup titles the Kamloops, B.C., rider holds. She’s won five Canadian XC mountain bike titles, including the most recent edition, and stopped off in Scotland to win a gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
