Post Can you mix component’s from different group sets?

I’m 6′ 4″ tall and I weight 240 lbs. I would like to buy a new group set for my bike, and I would like to change to SRAM but they don’t have a 180mm crank. I’ve heard allot of great things about SRAM except for the noise factor, which leads me to my question and that is, Can I use a Dura-ace crank, rear cassette and chain on a SRAM Red group set? This is my logic, fast shifting with RED, quite shifting with Dura-ace cassette and chain and my 180mm cranks. (Very few manufactures of 180mm cranks)

That should work fine, in fact probably better than fine, as Shimano’s front shifting (with the extensive machining on the front chainrings) is the best around.  In fact you may even want to use a Shimano FD, the general consensus on the Sram FD seems to be its a real weak point in an otherwise fine groupset.

I am a shimano man myself, but I have used Red enough and it shifts fine.  I just prefer the way Shimano stuff feels, especially the new Dura Ace and Ultegra stuff.

Shimano and SRAM are cross-compatible, but you’ll never get as good shifting performance when you’re mixing the levers and derailleurs from different systems. I’ve always been a shimano person, and ridden ultegra for most of the last decade. I recently switched to SRAM force, and what a difference. I find the shifting (front and rear) much smoother. It’s a tad louder than Shimano.

You’re probably alright if you use the DA cranks and or front chainrings, but I’d stay away from leaving a DA front derailleur on there with Red.
