Cyclocross Wheels and Tires

In cyclocross the right wheels and tires can have a huge impact on performance.

Perhaps more so than any other cycling discipline, in cyclocross the right wheels and tires can have a huge impact on performance. The first choice to make is clincher or tubular? While clincher tires are easier to mount and cheaper to repair (just swap tubes), serious ‘cross racers prefer tubulars, which can be run at lower pressures to deliver better traction that is not possible with clinchers. The second thing to consider is your weight and riding style. Heavier or less finesse-oriented riders should consider beefier wheels while those with a deft touch can get away with lighter choices. In both cases, ‘cross specific wheels are heavier than similar road-oriented hoops so they can withstand the abuse of typical cyclocross races.
