Trek has announced changes to its two cyclocross bikes: Boone and Crockett. The most notable change comes on the disc-brake equipped models, such as Boone 5 disc, Boone 9 disc
Crockett 5 disc, Crockett 9 disc. Their front forks will now come with 15-mm thru-axles. The Waterloo, Wis.-based company says the new forks will reduce flex and thereby make for better steering. The increased rigidity of the thru-axle setup will also help maintain proper rotor alignment. The 5 series models will have carbon-fibre forks with aluminum steering tubes, while the 9 series and framesets will come with full carbon forks and steering tubes. The full carbon fork/steering tubes are 120 grams lighter than their carbon/aluminum counterparts. The downside to thru-axles for those ‘crossers who pit wheels instead of complete bikes would be slightly longer wheel-change times. The rear wheels will keep the quick-release skewers because the company didn’t feel the benefits of thru-axles were as great at the back. Boone and Crockett owners who would like to upgrade to the new forks can do so through Trek dealers soon.

The other big change is the colour of the bikes. In a release, the company was quite cheeky about the importance of the colour of a bike. “Be aware that Trek takes its colour theory very seriously,” the release read. “Through some highly scientific and complicated research, the details of which we won’t bore you with, Trek has scientifically proven that Boone and Crockett’s new colour schemes result in a 16.2 per cent increase in mid-race hand-ups and an 117.4 per cent increase in calling your bike a ‘whip.’ Trust us. We use science and stuff.” In another document, the company said the colour schemes will give you 16.2 per cent more heckles. They don’t address the shocking similarity that figure has with the percentage of increased hand-ups. To further muddy the waters, or cyclocross course if you will, that second document claims the colours will garner “a whopping 18.6 per cent more hand-ups during races.” Startlingly, Trek has thus issued two figures for the hand-uppedness of the bikes. Canadian Cycling Magazine has contacted Trek HQ for clarification on the matter.
