With the right computer and equipment, you can see what gear you are in. It can also work in conjunction with cadence sensors and power meters.

Pioneer, the company better known for audio components, has come out with a power meter. The computer displays left and right power, as well as information about the efficiency of your pedal stroke. The red colour indicates where the stroke is producing power. The blue shows where the force applied to the pedal is actually impeding the production of power.

On the drive side, the strain gauge of the Pioneer power meter is affixed to the inside of the crankarm. The battery and transmitter sits within the spider. On the non-drive side, the gauge and transmitter unit is on the crankarm. At the moment, the system can only be used with Dura-Ace 7900 or 9000 cranks.
