New and cool stuff from the big trade show

Interbike is North America’s biggest bike trade show. Here are highlights of what’s new and cool among the hundreds of brands and booths.

Pioneer continues to have a strong offering of power meters for Shimano cranks. Pioneer has a single-side power meter out now for the new Ultegra 8000. The full dual-leg unit will be out in December. The Japan-based electronics company is also launching an app for its Cyclo-Sphere data-analysis system. Currently, Cyclo-Sphere is browser-based on mobile and desktop. The move to an app will speed things up for smartphone users checking data at the café. The iPhone app is set to launch in two weeks, Android sometime later.

Oakley is bringing out two new premium cycling kits for the 2018 season. The JB (for Jawbreaker, like the glasses) is the company’s top-line kit is built with a two-way stretch fabric, laser and taped seams, and a premium chamois. Designed in partnership with Bioracer technology, the kit employs fabric is specifically created to wick away sweat to keep you cool. The second kit, Road, is made with the same feel, fit and tech as the JB version. The Road, however, uses more traditional seams and is made with a more affordable fabric. Look for these clothes in select Canadian shops in February.

See that black tire? It’s green. Schwalbe’s commuter tire, the Road Cruiser, is made with renewable and recycled materials. Some of the rubber is from renewable farms in Indonesia. Some comes from recycled latex gloves. The bead features some recycled steel. Schwalbe is hoping to expand these green features to other categories of tire.

Wilier gives you options with its Cento10NDR. On one frame, you can run disc brakes or calipers. Choose your preferred way to scrub speed. At the top of the seatstays, there’s an elastomer that offers 4 mm of travel. The frame can accommodate tires as wide as 32 mm.

Kryptonite, the company known for protecting your ride with its locks, added rider protection to its repetoire last year with lights. This year, it has a new light lineup. The brightest in the set is the Alley F-650. It throws 650 lumens on to the road ahead. With that amount of light, the F-650 can help you navigate some dark trails, too. It has six modes, including a daytime pulse and a nighttime pulse. It’s runtime ranges from two hours to 26.
