Chain Lubes

Chain Lubes

A properly-lubed bike chain reduces friction, improves shifting and minimizes drive train wear. But with an almost infinite number of options, riders might mistakenly think they need a PhD in chemical engineering to choose the right lube. Luckily, almost any lube will do a great job if it’s applied frequently. Here are two effective bike lubes. Choose either one, apply according to the instructions and start riding.

Squirt – $12
Bikinventions
12058

Consisting of a wax/water emulsion, Squirt delivers a long-lasting, dirt-shedding layer of wax that effectively lubes the chain. While it may require more frequent applications during wet conditions, the reduced grime and chainring-tattoos are worth the trade off.

Purple Extreme – $17
Bike Medicine
12016

Riders starting with a very clean chain will be impressed with Purple Extreme’s lubricating and dirt-repelling properties. This versatile lightweight lube is also a good choice for derailleur and brakes pivots. Just make sure the components are exceptionally clean as Purple Extreme’s solvent-based carrier tends to loosen dirt and grease making a proper mess of the drive train – start clean and enjoy almost friction-free performance.
