2015 Canada Cup BMX ends, overall winners crowned

The 2015 Canada Cup BMX finished Sunday in Calgary, with competition at the Calgary BMX Racing Association track determining the top high-flying riders of the series.

The 2015 Canada Cup BMX finished Sunday in Calgary, with competition at the Calgary BMX Racing Association track determining the top high-flying riders of the series.

Out of 458 entries, Cycling Canada reported, 442 contestants in all participated in a variety of categories, ranging from junior to intermediate to elite. After the dust settled on the wild, fast-paced Calgary track, four overall winners were decided in the junior categories, with two elite riders taking top results in their respective classes.

For the Juniors, Alex Tougas of Pitt Meadows, B.C. took best overall in the male division, Daina Tuchsherer of Airdrie, Alta. topped the junior female class, Milton, Ontario’s Josh Samells was best overall in the junior development male class, and for the junior development females, Cayleigh van Staalduinen of St. Albert, Alta. was the overall winner.

In the Elite male class, meanwhile, Brandon Reid of Victoria, B.C. took top honours with 3,270 total points — 200 points ahead of the nearest contender, James Palmer. A third British Columbian, Jared Ennis of Maple Ridge Cycle, was third in the standings with 2,950 points. Tory Nyhaug, who had a stellar Pan Am Games at the Etobicoke, Ont. BMX track, was in fourth place with 2,690 total points.

New Zealand’s Sarah Walker, with 3,480 total points, beat out Amanda Carr of the United States and Canada’s Amelia Walsh to take top standings for the Elite women.
