Former UCI world mountain bike champion Catharine Pendrel of Luna and Thomas Skinner of Sponsor Connected/VoMax were crowned B.C. provincial elite cyclocross champions Sunday at Nanaimo’s Bowen Park.

Pendrel finished her six laps in 45:44, beating former champion Sandra Walter (Liv/Giant) by a minute. They were followed by Wendy Simms. Skinner actually came second in his eight lap race to Aaron Schooler of Team H&R Block, who set the fastest lap time on the day. But Schooler and third place Andre Sutton are from Edmonton and ineligible for the Kona Cup.

The hotly contested masters men 35-44 and masters men 45-54 raced together, with Bob Welburr (Cannondale) scorching the seven laps required of the 35-44 category in 51:40. Dale Plant (Kona) nipped four-time Canadian champion and race organizer Normon Thibault by 15 seconds in the 45-54 group.

The under-19 men raced with several older categories. Rhys Verna (Team Squamish) took the title with a 39:12 time over five laps. Lister Farrar (Tripleshot) took the masters men 55+ victory with 37:27 over four laps, while Glenowyn Carlson (Oak Bay Bikes-Victoria Wheel) was top masters women 45+, completing four laps in 38:11. Jen Erlandson (Pro City Racing) triumphed in the masters women 35-44 category with a time of 38:48 over four laps.

The youngest winners were in the under-13 category, with Emilly Johnston (Trail Bikes) prevailing for the girls and Cody Scott (dEVo) taking the boys’ honours. The under-15 champs are Conor Martin (Chainline Bikes) and Sarah Van Dam (Tripleshot). Faster times over the three junior laps came from the under-17’s, with Sidney McGill (Juventus) taking the win for the girls at 26:36 and top boy being James Grant (VIPYRS) at 26:33. Maggie Coles-Lyster (Local Ride Racing) was the fastest under-19 woman.

The open category riders had three or four laps to negotiate. Lucas Gallagher took the men’s side while Brenna Pauly (Tripleshot) emerged with the women’s win.
