Canadian champion Boivin makes bid for glory on Stage 1 of Tour of Croatia

Canadian road champion Guillaume Boivin attacked his breakmates late in the first stage of the Tour of Croatia, with the pack absorbing him only in the last 3-km of the finishing circuit. Giacomo Nizzolo (Italy/Trek-Segafredo), runner-up to Marcel Kittel at the Dubai Tour, triumphed in the bunch sprint.

Boivin joined the Israeli Continental team Cycling Academy Team for two seasons after a year at Optum. Cycling Academy also has the Israeli (Guy Sagiv) and Namibian (Dan Craven) national road champions in its ranks.

This is Boivin’s fourth race in Croatia this season and second stage race. His best result of 2016 was seventh in the field sprint of the Croatian one-day contest, the Trofej Umag.

Boivin was part of a quartet of escapees that included teammate Sagiv. The route was a straight one that ran along the border with Hungary.

With 30-km remaining and Data Dimension running down the fugitives with a mind to launch Mark Cavendish, Boivin bolted and fought very hard to keep his gap. Trek-Segafredo joined the pace-making with a mind to give Nizzolo his first victory of the season.

The peloton finally enveloped Boivin with 3-km to go in the finish town of Varazdin. It was a messy sprint with a right hand curve right before the line. Cavendish didn’t get the line that wanted but Nizzolo did. The Italian had a decent Cobbled Classics season, taking 6th in the Tour of Flanders and 11th in Gent-Wevelgem. He’s looking forward to the sprint opportunities of the Giro d’Italia.
