Canadian women’s team pursuit squad secure silver medal at worlds

The Canadian women’s team pursuit squad secured the silver medal in a riveting finale at the UCI world track championships on Thursday in Cali, Colombia.

Cycling Canada Cyclisme selected Laura Brown, Jasmin Glaesser, Allison Beveridge and Steph Roorda to race the qualifying round. Great Britain won the round with a time of 4:28.597, beating the Canadian team’s time of 4:30.721, Australia’s time of 4:31.504, and Poland’s time of 4:37.786.

Great Britain won the world title during a heated 4,000 m finale against the Canadian team. The Canadians were ahead for much of the race until they lost one rider toward the end. Great Britain won the race with a time of 4:23.407. The Canadian team finished with a time of 4:24.696 and the silver medal.

The women’s team pursuit squad won the overall title during the World Cup series this year, after winning gold in Guadalajara, and two silver medals, in Manchester and Aguascalientes.

Earlier in the day, Canada’s Hugo Barrette placed third in the repechages but did not advance in the keirin. He will also compete in the men’s sprint on Saturday.

The women’s points race will be held on Saturday and the women’s omnium events will be split up between Saturday and Sunday.
