Catharine Pendrel defends Canadian cyclocross title in Winnipeg
Catharine Pendrel (Luna Pro Team), world cross-country mountain bike champion, defended her Canadian cyclocross title Saturday by holding off teammate Maghalie Rochette at the Forks in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where the Assiniboine river runs into the Red.
The Elite and Junior women raced the 3.3-km course of sandpits, run-ups, barriers and a Knoll of Pain together on a clear, sunny day buffeted by stiff winds. After the starting gun Rochette took the hole shot, but BC champion and 2012 national champion Michal Dyck took over the lead at the second sandpit when Rochette took an errant line.
Dyck led Pendrel, Sandra Walter (LIV Canada) and Rochette into the second lap where she crashed. Pendrel led and extended her lead with Rochette cutting the gap on each lap, but Pendrel entered the last lap with 24-seconds over her teammate. Meanwhile, Natasha Elliott (Cycle-Smart) pursued Walter for the third spot and Dyck continued to work hard as the air rang with cowbells.
Pendrel had plenty of time to celebrate at the line and when Rochette finished the teammates embraced warmly. Walter was the bronze medalist, keeping Elliott at bay. It’s the second consecutive year that Elliott finished fourth.
Local rider Anna Schappert (Dark Red Racing) came fifth.
