Citing quick-release problems, seventeen brands voluntarily target 1.5 million bikes in joint recall

In a huge, wide-reaching move, seventeen leading bike manufacturers have recalled 1.5 million bikes, officials with the Bicycle Product Suppliers Association announced.

The recall, releases say, involves certain bikes equipped with disc brakes and quick-release wheels. The cam lever, they explain, extends dangerously close to the disc brake’s rotor if improperly adjusted or left open, putting the rider at risk of serious injury if the two come in contact mid-ride.

Addressing that danger, the recall — conducted in tandem with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Consumer Protection Agency of the United Mexican States and Health Canada — has the well-being of the cycling community in mind, BPSA officials say.

“Rider safety,” said BPSA committee chairperson Patrick Cunnane, “is our top priority. We are pleased to be able to serve a role in bringing together the participating companies and facilitating this unprecedented large group effort.”

Earlier this year, another recall, citing similar issues involving the combination of disc brake and quick release lever, involved close to 1 million Trek bikes. Cyclists are advised to visit the Quick-Release Recall website to see if their bikes are affected, and if so, to stop riding immediately and take it to the dealer for a replacement quick-release. Conveniently, the fix, they say, can be made in as little as five minutes.
