The city of Montreal has pledged to commit $250,000 to the Mardis Cyclistes de Lachine criterium series over the next three years. The 10-stage Mardis Cyclistes de Lachine series was founded in 1978 by Tino Rossi who is passing the organization of the event to Cycle Neron next year.

The announcement ensures the continued presence of the popular series which races weekly on Tuesday nights throughout the summer around Parc Lasalle in Lachine on the island of Montreal. Montreal mayor, Denis Coderre expressed the reasons for the cities support for the event in a press release saying, “Cycling is firmly rooted in Montreal. Athletes and spectators recognize that Mardis Cyclistes de Lachine has become a popular event whose influence goes far beyond the boundaries of Montreal.” The funding comes from the Plan Vélo which works towards promoting cycling.

The mayor of the borough of Lachine, Claude Dauphin welcomed the announcement saying, “What great news . Tuesdays have become a world-class cycling event and Montreal recognizes the importance of these major races. We are extremely proud of the event.”

Every season, prominent athletes participate in the event which features elite, cadet and junior categories for men and women. The 2016 series wraps up on August 16. Last year, nearly 200 athletes participated in the final event. Jean-François Laroche of Cycles Régis currently leads the elite men’s series while Raphaele Lemieux of IBike made her lead in the series insurmountable with a victory on August 9.
