Clara Hughes, who has won multiple Olympic medals, including two in cycling, is writing her memoir. Open Heart, Open Mind is scheduled to be on shelves this fall.

The book will cover Hughes’s development as both a speed skater and a cyclist. It will also explore her troubled relationship with her family and her struggles with depression.

“I want to share my experience,” she said. “Hopefully it will encourage people to better understand the struggle of mental illness and most importantly let people know they are not alone.”

Open Heart, Open Mind will be published by Simon & Schuster Canada. Kevin Hanson, president and publisher of the Simon & Schuster said, “We are honoured to be working with Clara to help deliver her heartening account of her life to readers throughout North America.”

A French-language edition of the book will be published by Éditions Libre Expression simultaneously.

In 2014, from March 14 to July 1, Hughes rode across Canada to raise awareness for mental health.
