Cycling Canada chooses 15 for UCI road world championships in Spain

Cycling Canada Cyclisme has selected 15 Canadians for the UCI Road World Championships in Ponferrada, Spain from September 21 to 28. Three pro women and four pro men made the selection, while four women and four men of 18 to 16 years of age were chosen to represent Canada’s junior talent.

Elite Women
Joëlle Numainville (Laval, QC) road race
Karol-Ann Canuel (Gatineau, QC) time trial and road race
Leah Kirchmann (Winnipeg, MB) time trial and road race

Kirchmann swept the elite women’s competitions at the Canadian National Road Cycling Championships and placed third in the inaugural Le Course by Le Tour de France in July. Canuel will be in Specialized-lululemon’s team time trial squad.

Elite Men
Svein Tuft (Langley BC) time trial
Christian Meier (Langley, BC) road race
Michael Woods (Ottawa, ON) road race
Ryan Anderson (West Vancouver, BC) road race
Alternate: Guillaume Boivin (Longueuil, QC) road race

Tuft will be a key part of Orica-GreenEdge’s team time trial lineup. Woods was recently top Canadian in the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montreal, while Anderson was top Canadian at the Tour of Alberta.

Junior Women
Dafné Théroux-Izquierdo, 18 (Ste-Thérèse, QC) time trial and road race
Laurence Dumais, 17 (St-Jérôme, QC) road race
Emeliah Harvie, 16 (Banff, AB) road race
Sara Poidevin, 18 (Canmore, AB) road race

Junior Men
Pier-André Coté, 17 (St-Henri-de-Lévis, QC) time trial and road race
Edward Walsh, 18 (Halifax, NS) road race
Jean-Simon D’anjou, 18 (Lévis, QC) road race
Derek Gee, 17 (Osgoode, ON) road race

The trade team time trials on are September 21, while the Junior women and men contest their time trials on September 22 and 23 respectively. The Elite women’s chrono is also on the 23rd, while the men face the race of truth the next day. The Junior women’s road race is scheduled for Friday the 26th and the Junior men and Elite women have their championship road circuits on the 27th. Finally, the Elite men do battle on the road on the 28th.
