First road race winner at Ponferrada worlds is Danish

The 2014 UCI road world championships in Ponferrada, Spain continued Friday with the opening day of road races, and the first 2014 road champion retained her crown from last year. Junior woman Amalie Dideriksen (Denmark) outsprinted Italian Sofia Bertizzolo, who Dideriksen had been in a breakaway with on the final lap. Dideriksen won last year’s title out of a escape trio. Canadian Emelie Harvie broke the top-20 with a 19th-place finish.

The race of 17- and 18-year-olds was together for the first three of four 18.2-km circuits, with the two climbs on course not splitting the field. However, on the last lap, European champion Bertizzolo and her compatriot Sofia Beggin used the final ascent of the Mirador as a springboard to bolt. Dideriksen bridged over and the Italians began to dither, allowing a 20-rider peloton to catch up.

In the race to the line, Bertizzolo opened up her sprint, but Dideriksen came around the Italian to snag the gold by a half bike-length. Polish rider Agnieszka Skalniak nipped Czech Nikola Noskova for the bronze and the 767 euros on offer.

Denmark also had a strong junior women’s individual time trial, as Pernille Mathiesen took the silver.

Just before Dideriksen’s double, British rider Lucy Garner also took two consecutive junior women’s titles.

All four Canadian junior women finished the race, packing three riders in the top 33 out of 85 finishers.
