Gerard Vroomen and René Wiertz purchase 3T component company

Gerard Vroomen

Gerard Vroomen, the Dutch engineer and inventor who helped to co-found Canadian bike manufacturer Cervélo Cycles with Phil White in 1995, has joined with 3T CEO René Wiertz to purchase all shares of the respected Italy-based component company.

In a press release, Wiertz said, “It gives me great pleasure to tell the world that Gerard has agreed to join me as a partner in 3T. We’ve grown into a very successful company in the last few years and Gerard will support us to continue on this path.”

Established in 1961, 3T components, especially handlebars, have stayed prominent in the pro peloton as preferred materials changed from steel to aluminum to carbon fibre.

About the partnership, Vroomen said, “I’ve known René since he resurrected 3T in 2007 and I really like his professionalism and work ethic. He’s done an exceptional job, starting from zero and rebuilding 3T into one of the leading component brands globally. At Cervélo, we were his very first customer and he became one of our most reliable suppliers.”

Vroomen sold his shares in Cervélo in 2011, and the manufacturer of the R5 and S3 is now owned by Dutch company Pon Holdings, which also has Raleigh, Univega and Focus in its stable. In 2012, Vroomen co-founded, with ex-BMC CEO Andy Kessler, Open a small, high-end mountain bike company.
