Haedo and Wilborne prevail in Joe Martin Stage Race criterium

United HealthCare mobbed the top of Sunday’s finale criterium on the women’s side of the Joe Martin Stage Race, seizing the first four places. American Scotti Wilborne took the day’s prize. In the men’s edition in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Lucas Sebastian Haedo (Argentina/Jamis-Hagens Berman) outdueled Ty Magner (USA/Hincapie), who was also second on Friday. Again UnitedHealthCare prevailed with double stage winner John Murphy (USA) coming third to wear the final yellow jersey.

Wilborne and teammate Ruth Winder led for most of the race and finished one-two, with Saturday’s winner Coryn Rivera third and Alexis Ryan, runner-up to Rivera on Saturday, fourth. Even though United HealthCare dominated the last two stages, it could not dislodge Lauren Stephens (USA/TIBCO) from the top of the GC. Leah Kirchmann couldn’t reel back the two seconds to third place Linda Villumsen (New Zealand/United HealthCare) even by coming fifth on Sunday and kept her GC fourth.

The men’s race saw the peloton chasing down a quartet of escapees on the last couple of laps. Haedo, runner-up on Saturday and fourth on Friday, prevailed and took the green sprint jersey from Murphy. Murphy was able to make up six seconds on Gregory Brenes (Costa Rica/Jamis-Hagens Berman) on the course to in turn grab the yellow jersey. The top Canadian on the stage was Guillaume Boivin (Optum) in sixth and the best placed on final GC was Alex Cataford of Silber, 11th overall.
