Kreuziger solos to Amstel Gold victory

Hesjedal makes a late-race attack

Roman Kreuziger (Saxo Bank-Tinkoff) cruised to a solo win at the Amstel Gold Race on Sunday, April 14 in The Netherlands.

Amstel Gold Race kicked off the Ardennes Classics this weekend, which also includes La Flèche Wallonne and Liege-Bastogne-Liege. The opener was a 252-km race that included more than 30 climbs and finished nearly two kilometres after the final Cauberg ascent.

Kreuziger broke away from the field late in the race and finished less then half a minute ahead of the next group. Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) placed second and Simon Gerrans (Orica-GreenEdge) third.

Canada’s Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin-Sharp), who was apart of a chase group, attacked solo to try and bridge across to Kreuziger but he was unsuccessful. He finished 26th on the day, just over half a minute behind the winner.

Canada’s Francois Parisien (Argos-Shimano) finished in 76th place.
