Charles Bryer:

Good morning and welcome to Canadian Cycling Magazine’s live coverage of the Grand Prix Cycliste de Gatineau.

The ladies are lined up and ready to roll. Just under a minute until start.

10:01
The women’s field lined up and ready to roll! They’re off.
10:04
Charles Bryer:

For those who have yet to see the course profile. There are no serious climbs to speak of on course. There are however some sections that are false flat and exposed to wind which could prove selective. The finish is slightly uphill which could also make for an exciting finale.

10:04
The circuit profile for today’s race.
10:09
Charles Bryer:

The attacks have already begun. A Kallisto-FCV rider is now 30 seconds in front of the main field.

10:12
Charles Bryer:

Anje Thamm is the Kallisto-FCV rider off the front. She is 30 secs ahead at the last check.

10:17
Charles Bryer:

The field just came through the start-finish area to complete the first lap. Anje Thamm was sill off the front, but was most certainly not 30 seconds up the road. More like 10.

Comment From Guest

Things are getting intense.

10:23
The main field chasing.
10:33
Charles Bryer:

Optum is leading the field. The group is already splintering at the back alrady. No time for tail-gunning today.

10:34
Charles Bryer:

Despite the high pace – the main field is all together at the moment.

10:36
Charles Bryer:

Denise Ramsden (Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) looked comfortable in the group on the second lap. Overall she seemed pretty relaxed about the race this morning before the start. This a course that is well-suited to her strengths.

10:36
Denise Ramsden (Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) relaxing in the sunshine before the race today.
10:38
Charles Bryer:

The winds do seem to be picking up slightly – with the high pace it could split the field.

10:49
Charles Bryer:

This morning was quite when I pre-rode the course at 6am. Despite there being no real climb on the course there are false flat sections that could catch some of the favourites off guard. Additionally with the uphill finish – timing will be crucial whether the spring from the main field or a small group.

10:49
The distinct calm at the start/finish early this morning.
10:51

Cat Dessureault attacks and gets a brief 10 second gap but is brought back.
10:52
Pack strung out on the climb through the start finish. Lap 4 begins. Carrie Cart mill Stevens gets a 20 sec gap.
10:56
Charles Bryer:

Next lap is a prime – the group was single file and the attacks are coming.

10:57
Charles Bryer:

Carrie Cartmill (Stevens – The Cyclery) has a 25-30 seconds gap on the peloton. She could take the prime. They are letting her go at the moment.

10:59
Pretty much single file. These ladies aren’t riding easy.

Which direction is wind coming from? Wind speed?

11:00
Charles Bryer:

The wind seems to have died down actually.

Where are you covering the race from on the course?

11:03
Charles Bryer:

Intermediate sprint coming soon….the group is coming down the ramp en route to the start/finish.

11:05
Charles Bryer:

Cartmill takes the prime. She has a solid gap on the main field who were riding fast but not all out per se.

11:07
11:07
Charles Bryer:

Cartmill was moving I couldn’t even get her in the photo.

11:09
Charles Bryer:

Next prime is coming. Lap 6 – the ladies are on their fifth lap.

11:18
Charles Bryer:

The group is all back together now. Cartmill is back in the group. Optum is on the front taking control of things.

11:22
11:25
Charles Bryer:

The pace has definitely slowed. There is a sense of hesitation in the bunch. There are at least a dozen riders who have been dropped already. The pace was high for the first five laps and there is still a lot of racing to go – perhaps this is the mid-race lull.

11:27
Charles Bryer:

It’s a prime lap – I have a feeling the intensity will rise again for the sprint and after.

11:28
Charles Bryer:

There could be a counter-move following the sprint. At least the bigger teams will likely use that tactic.

11:39
Charles Bryer:

In the real deal car

11:40
11:44
Charles Bryer:

Stephanie roorda of SAS Mazda just attacked with Cartmill.

11:44
Charles Bryer:

Lots of riders getting dropped. It’s hot and fast.

11:46
Getting trapped behind grupettos. More updates soon.
11:48
Charles Bryer:

There appears to be a much smaller peloton up ahead.

11:51
Charles Bryer:

Break with 18 second gap.

11:58
Charles Bryer:

As expected the sixth lap the race got quite a bit more intense. The main field was absolutely blowing a part.

12:00
Charles Bryer:

Seven riders in the move with 15 seconds ahead of the main group. All the big teams are in the move. Names to come soon. The race is happening now!

12:02
Charles Bryer:

Gap is now 30 seconds.

12:05
Charles Bryer:

Team Tibco is on the front now. The gap is 35 seconds to the break-away.

12:12
Charles Bryer:

Allen (Team NCCH), , Wilcoxson (Optum), Roorda (SAS Mazda), Foreman-Mackey (Stevens – The Cyclery), Routley (Trek Red Truck) and Anika Todd (Tibco) all in the move on lap 8.

12:13
Charles Bryer:

Now on lap nine – many gruppettos now. The race is is full gas now.

12:13
Almost 37 kmh avg after 2 hours.
Charles Bryer:

And the race is clearly getting faster. Thanks for the lift on lap 7.

12:14
Charles Bryer:

37km/hr for the first 2hrs of the race – on a course that isn’t flat. The speeds are higher now and it appears the wind is picking up too.

12:15
Charles Bryer:

Tibco and Optum taking control of the race. Time will tell what happens. Some of the race’s main hitters are in the break. Should Tibco chase with Todd in the move?

12:20
Comment From guest

yes

Charles Bryer:

To say the least that was a concise answer.

12:26
Charles Bryer:

Ramsden is in the move. With 3 laps to go. The peloton has sat up, Apparently Optum likes this one –

12:26
Charles Bryer:

Albrecht, Glaesser, Ramsden all in the move.

12:30
Charles Bryer:

Kirsti Lay (SAS-Mazda), Flavia Oliveira (Garneau Factory Racing), Denise Ramsden (Optum), Jasmin Glaesser (Tibco) – well that’s a Canadian move to say the very least. Justine Clift (West of Quebec Wheelers) has just bridged across as well.

12:31
Charles Bryer:

Gap is now 45 seconds. Optum is liking this move – the main field has clearly slowed.

12:34
Optum slowing the bunch.
12:38
Charles Bryer:

break is 1:10 up the road.

12:46
Charles Bryer:

The break has clearly established itself – Kirsti Lay (SAS- Mazda) was driving the pace through the start finish with 2 laps remaining.

12:47
Kirsti Lay leaving a wee gap.
12:49
Charles Bryer:

The gap is almost 2 minutes now.

12:56
Charles Bryer:

Denise Ramsden had a minor mishap – but seems to have caught back onto the move.

12:58
Six riders are on the final lap.
12:59
One lap to go for the main field 1:41 behind the break.
1:01
Charles Bryer:

Optum seems to be lifting the pace in the bunch. The gap is down to 1:25.

1:06
Charles Bryer:

The gap is coming down, however it’s unlikely the break will be caught.

1:07
Charles Bryer:

less than a half lap to go.

1:08
Charles Bryer:

once again the gap is growing again 1:25 now. The winner will come from the break. Will anyone attack?

1:14
Ramsden wins!
1:15
Charles Bryer:

1:18
