Martin takes Tour de Romandie’s final time trial, Zakarin wins title

Tony Martin (Germany/Etixx-QuickStep), three-time world time trial champion, rolled to victory in Sunday’s rainy Tour de Romandie chrono finale, but it was relative unknown Ilnur Zakarin (Russia/Katusha) who grabbed the title. Zakarin, who slipped on the yellow leader’s jersey after Saturday’s queen stage, even withstood a bike change to place third on the day.

The 17.3-km course had a lump in its latter half, but Martin was able to wheel the route in 23:17. Simon Spilak (Slovenia) came in 11-seconds slower to finish GC runner-up for three consecutive years and give Katusha the morale-boosting one-two. Katusha’s Yuri Trofimov (Russia) also was 13th overall, giving the squad the team title. Zakarin, Trofimov and mountains jersey winner Maxim Belkov (Russia) will contest the Giro d’Italia.

Chris Froome (Great Britain/Sky) seemed poised to nab his third consecutive title, only 13-seconds back of the Russian overnight, but he placed 13th, 34-seconds in arrears of Martin. This was enough to give Froome the final podium spot. Saturday’s winner Thibaut Pinot (France/FDJ) just missed the podium; his consolation was the white young rider’s jersey.

Giro hopeful Rigoberto Uran (Colombia/Etixx-QuickStep) came fifth overall.

Ryder Hesjedal’s 24:49 moved him up one spot on GC to 24th.
