Canadian Cycling Magazine is happy to report that the members of the NexGen men’s track endurance team who were headed to Brussels Monday night are safe in Paris after their flight, scheduled to land Tuesday morning, was delayed.

The team’s flight was travelling over London when bombs were detonated at the Brussels airport. The flight was rerouted to Paris, where the riders and staff checked into a hotel and are waiting to get on a flight to Spain as soon as possible for their training camp.

The team’s Belgian based manager is en route to Paris to collect team equipment and drop it off at the training base Tuesday.

CCM reached out to to NextGen team staff. No one was available for comment. Kris Westwood, high-performance manager at Cycling Canada, later contacted CCM to clarify. “We feel attention should be on the victims of the attack in Brussels and not on us,” Westwood said. “We felt that commenting on it would be inappropriate.”

NextGen MTE members in Paris include Sean Mackinnon, Bayley Simpson, Evan Burtnik and Willem Boersma. Luc Arseneau and Emily Wood, Cycling Canada staff, are with the riders. The NextGen riders already in Spain are Aidan Caves, Alec Cowan, William Elliot, Adam Jamieson, Jay Lamoureux and Edward Walsh.
