Nic Hamilton out of Commonwealth Games after track accident

Nic Hamilton

Nic Hamilton, a member of Canada’s men’s team pursuit squad, is out of the Commonwealth Games following an accident on the track. On Wednesday, Hamilton was training at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome the day before the four-member squad would start competition. He collided, at speed, with a female technical official. Hamilton and his bike then flipped over the official. Both were reported to have suffered concussions. The official is thought to have broken her collarbone.

“[Hamilton] would have been travelling at 55 to 60 km/h,” said Kris Westwood, the high-performance manager of Canada’s cycling teams and the team leader in Glasgow, to the Canadian Press. “It broke his [bike] frame, and destroyed his helmet. So his helmet did the job it was supposed to do.”

Because Hamilton suffered a concussion, he will not compete for seven days. Hamilton was not only part of the men’s team pursuit squad with Zach Bell, Rémi Pelletier-Roy, Ed Veal and Aidan Caves, he was scheduled to compete in the road race with Bell, Veal, Pelletier-Roy, Will Routley and Svein Tuft.
