Pelletier-Roy wins bronze at the Commonwealth Games

glasgow_2014_commonwealth_games_logosOn Sunday, Remi Pelletier-Roy won the bronze medal in the men’s scratch race at the Commonwealth Games. It was thanks to his finishing kick that Pelletier-Roy was able to bring home Canada’s first cycling medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.  Pelletier-Roy’s performance couldn’t have come at a better time as it was the last day of competition at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow.

Canadian track veteran Zach Bell was a key factor in Pelletier-Roy’s ride.  Thanks to Bell’s tactics he was able to help place his teammate in the perfect position ahead of the final sprint. Pelletier-Roy launched with everything he had left and was able to take the bronze behind New Zealand’s Shane Archbold and Glen O’Shea of Australia.

The men’s keirin featured no Canadians in the final round. Hugo Barrette was the best placed Canadian in the semi-finals to advance to the final; however during that heat he was forced to the outside by a New Zealand rider. Despite the rider’s infraction and subsequent relegation, it was not enough for Barrette to make it through. He did however win the consolation final by several bike lengths and was given a final placing of seventh.

In the women’s points race, Team Canada raced well but were unable to earn a medal. Despite Jasmin Glaesser’s strong showing early on – her final sprint was not what the she or the team had hoped for. She started her final kick a little too far behind. In the end Glaesser finished sixth.
