Seven Canadians will go for the hour record on Sept. 23

To celebrate Canada150, seven Ontario athletes will compete against the clock on Day of the Hour in Milton

Beginning at 8 am on September 23 at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre in Milton, Ont., seven Canadian cyclist will attempt to break hour records for their ages groups and genders. According to the organizers, if and when these records are achieved Canada will become the country to hold the most hour records. As the athletes are from Ontario, it would then become the province with the most hour records in Canada.

The seven Canadians, three women and four men, are from the five Ontario municipalities or Milton, Mississauga, Newmarket, Toronto, and Ottawa range in age from 32 to 66 covering both the amateur and professional levels. The hour record is one of cyclings most prestigious with athletes trying to cover as much distance in 60 minutes on e velodrome as possible.

The event is being called Day of the Hour. David Hainish from Milton will try and beat the current men’s 30 to 34 record of 47.764 km. Jane Emans of Milton will attempt the women’s 35 to 39 record with 42.16 km being the distance to beat. Ed Veal from Newmarket will attempt the men’s 40 to 44 record of 48.411 km. Jody Levine of Toronto will go to establish a women’s 45 to 49 record which currently has no existing record. Michael Nash of Ottawa will go for the men’s 50 to 54 record of 48.89 km. Bryn Currie of Toronto will aim for the women’s 50 to 54 record of 43.21 km. Finally Michael Kolesar of Mississauga will go for the men’s 66 to 69 record of 43.73 km.

The public is invited to attend the event on Sept. 23 with the first rider going off at 8:15 am. The riders will then go off at apprximately 90 minute intervals during the day. Tickets are available online through Eventbrite.
