The 2015 UCI paracycling road world championships are underway in Notwill, Switzerland, and Shelley Gautier, continuing her strong season in 2015, once again topped the field in her class.

Successfully defending her world time trial title on Thursday, Gautier earned her ninth rainbow jersey in as many starts.

Gautier’s gold medal win was in the women’s T1 class, a result that put her across the start-finish line more than two minutes ahead of the nearest contender, Yulia Sibagatova of Russia. It’s the second time in as many months that Gautier has prevailed by beating out the Russian rider, and by a similar margin. On June 15, at the 2015 UCI paracycling world cup in Yyverdon-les-bains, Switzerland, Gautier’s tricycle crossed the finish line in that competiton 2:41 ahead of Sibagatova.

Gautier finished the 14 km course in 36:32.87, 2:22 ahead of Sibagatova, with Russia’s Svetlana Perova coming in third, 8:33 behind the Toronto rider.

In the women’s C5 class, meanwhile, Nicole Clermont of Sherbrooke, Que. finished in fourth place, falling just nine seconds short of the podium with a time of 34:23. In the women’s C4 class, Marie-Claude Molnar finished fifth.

The road races of the 2015 UCI paracycling world championships will take place on Saturday and Sunday of this weekend, with the time trial for handbike riders happening tomorrow, July 31.
