Jon Sanderson, the vice-president of marketing at Contour, has five tips that will help you to make better point-of-view videos with your action camera.

Know how to operate your camera

Lighting, frame rates, wide angle, turning on and off – action cameras developed these tools to increase the quality of the final product. Get to know how your camera works and operating it properly will become second nature. You’ll always be able to get the optimal shot.

Consider using multiple cameras

Shoot with the end product in mind. Using multiple cameras will let you show a variety of perspectives and will help connect viewers to what’s happening. Ideally, you’ll have one camera pointing at you, one pointing at what you are looking at and one showing the whole scene.

Become an expert at mounting the camera

It can be too easy to mount a camera incorrectly and accidentally have 50 per cent of the frame taken up by the side of your helmet. Get to know your mounts and how to line up shots so you can get everything in frame you want.

Learn from others

Look online. You’ll find everything from how to film specific activities and even how to film specific tricks so you can get great footage in every situation.

Do something with your footage

Share it! Don’t just the transfer the footage to your laptop and watch it a few times. Get comfortable with video-editing software and get into the habit of editing your content soon after it’s shot. Then, get online and share how awesome you are.
