They still lead the World Cup in the team pursuit standings, but Allison Beveridge, Kristi Lay, Jasmin Glaesser and Laura Brown found themselves runner-up to Australia in Saturday’s final of the Cambridge, New Zealand event. The quartet’s 4:18.267, only 0.054 slower than the Aussies, is a new Canadian record.

Earlier in the day, Canada beat the USA in the first round after qualifying with the best time on Friday. The Kiwis clipped the Americans for bronze in their final.

Canada will take both a 74-point lead over Australia and the USA and the white leaders’ jerseys into the final World Cup round in Hong Kong in January.

Beveridge was also out on the boards getting herself in good position for Sunday’s latter half of the omnium events, standing 4th after three events, her best placing 3rd in the scratch race that started the day of competition. Beveridge also came 4th in the individual pursuit and 5th in the elimination race.

After the omnium’s scratch race was the women’s sprint qualifying. Both Monique Sullivan and her Canadian team sprint record-setting partner Kate O’Brien qualified for the second round, O’Brien 12th with a 200-metre flying start time of 11.025 and Sullivan 14th with 11.180. However, O’Brien lost to French rider Virginie Cueff in the 1/16 final while Sullivan could not advance past Tania Calvo of Spain.

The best result of Remi Pelletier-Roy’s omnium bid was 7th in the individual pursuit while posting a time of 4:26.778. He’s 16th with half the events yet to roll.

Hugo Barrette did not advance beyond the first round of the derny-led keirin.

Sunday sees the finale of the omniums, Beveridge contest the scratch, Sullivan follow the derny and Barrette and Joseph Veloce chase the individual sprint honours.
