In advance of the Global Relay Canadian road cycling championships, we peppered Leah Guloien from Trek Red Truck Racing with six quick questions.

How has your season been so far?

The season has been going pretty good so far with the Trek Red Truck Racing. We just finished up racing at Banff Bike Fest where we swept the podium for the top three in GC. [Guloien was third overall in the Banff Bike Fest. —Ed.]

What events will you participate in at nationals?

I will be participating in both the road race and the criterium.

How have you been preparing for nationals?

Leading up to nationals, I have been trying to get in as much racing as possible, while balancing work and recovery. Races such as the B.C. provincials, Gatineau and the Banff Bike Fest have been great for preparation. After looking at the national road race course profile, I have been trying to work on my climbing legs and get myself mentally and physically prepared for multiple four-to-six-minute climbing efforts. I missed out on the year nationals was last held in Lac-Mégantic, so I have yet to pre-ride the course, so four to six minutes is just an estimate.

What are your feelings on last year’s results?

I was very disappointed with last year’s results, as I got a flat at a crucial point in the race and wasn’t able to make it back onto the lead group. I liked the course last year and the way the route was constructed with an out-and-back course with multiple circuits in the middle.

What are your goals this year?

I want to make the lead group, ideally a small group, and take it to the finish line. There are a lot of strong Canadian riders, so it is going to be an exciting race.

What’s next for you after nationals?

BC Superweek! I can’t wait to race close to home.
