Stephanie Roorda takes bronze in omnium at Track Cycling Challenge in Switzerland

Five Canadians in Switzerland to contest UCI event

The Track Cycling Challenge is a two-day UCI race that takes place at the Velodrome Suisse in Grenchen which took place on Dec. 2 and 3. Five Canadians were in Switzerland to contest the event. Stephanie Roorda earned a bronze medal in the omnium on the race’s second day.

On Day 1, Aidan Caves was Canada’s top finisher landing in seventh place in the men’s omnium which recently had it’s format changed to include only four races instead of six with the including of a new tempo race. Bayley Simpson finished in 13th in the omnium.

The second day began with Simpson missing the podium in the men’s points race taking fourth pace. Derek Gee was sixth. In the scratch race Gee finished in sixth with Simpson in 13th.

The men’s team pursuit were listed as starters but were listed as a did not start in the result sheet. Canada won it’s first ever World Cup gold medal in the men’s team pursuit in November in Apeldoorn.

Roorda started the omnium with a sixth place performance in the scratch race. She followed that up with a win in the tempo race before finishing third in the elimination race. Four riders, including Roorda, then tied with 20 points in the final event the points race. Roorda’s good ride resulted in a third place finish adding to her bronze medal in the scratch race from the London world championships in March.
