BMC Racing have confirmed that Steve Bauer will join the team in 2017 as the director of VIP services. After two years as the coordinator and head coach of cycling at the Mattamy National Cycling Center in Milton, Ont., Bauer joins up once again with Jim Ochowicz his former team manager during his racing days. Ochowicz was general at the 7-Eleven Cycling Team, later the Motorola Cycling Team, on which Bauer rode from 1990 to 1995.

“With TAG Heuer coming on board as an important partner of BMC Racing Team from 2017 we felt it was the right time to bring someone on to oversee our VIP services,” said BMC’s general manager Ochowicz. “And Steve Bauer was an easy choice to make. Steve has exactly the right profile and personality to welcome our guests at races throughout the season, and with his vast knowledge of cycling he will be a great ambassador for BMC Racing Team.

“Steve raced for 7-Eleven Cycling Team when TAG Heuer was a sponsor so it’s great to welcome Steve back at the same time that we welcome TAG Heuer back in cycling,” explained Ochowizc about bringing Bauer on board.

Bauer was the first Canadian to ever win a medal in road cycling at the Olympics when he took silver at the 1984 Los Angeles games road race. Bauer’s career also included a total of 14 days spent wearing the yellow jersey as the race leader at the Tour de France, a bronze medal at the 1984 world championships road race in Barcelona, Spain.

“I’m super excited to take this challenge which really came out of the blue. Through Steve Bauer Bike Tours we’re always hosting VIPs so when Jim Ochowicz phoned me it seemed to be a great fit,” said Bauer. “I know the sport well, I’m passionate about the sport, logistics and hosting people in an on the road environment is something that I’ve already done and just being familiar with the BMC Racing Team group is what attracted me to the role.

“To come back into WorldTour cycling is extremely exciting, especially with such a high-level team. BMC Racing Team is obviously one of the top teams on the WorldTour. I’m certainly looking forward to meeting the TAG Heuer team and all of the partners and the people that they’ll be bringing to the events. It’s a great opportunity and certainly also a challenge, for me personally and also the team, to fulfill VIP services within the sport environment.”

Following his racing career, Bauer co-founded Steve Bauer Cycling Tours in 1997. In 2007, Bauer co-founded Cycle Sport Management which developed and owned a UCI Continental team from 2008 to 2010. For the 2011 and 2012 seasons, the team moved up to UCI Professional Continental status under the sponsorship of Spidertech before ceasing operations ahead of the 2013 season.

Bauer has been inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame, the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame and the Canadian Cycling Hall of Fame.
