Tour of Flanders’ 100th edition details released

The 100th edition of the Tour of Flanders will resemble the 2015 route won by Alexander Kristoff and Elisa Longo Borghini, organizers announced on Monday.

The 100th edition of the Tour of Flanders will resemble the 2015 route won by Alexander Kristoff and Elisa Longo Borghini, organizers announced on Monday. The second Monument Classic of the 2016 season and the fourth race of the inaugural Women’s WorldTour will roll April 3 starting in Brugge and ending on the Minderbroedersstraat in Oudenaarde for the fifth year running.

Earlier in the fall Alejandro Valverde revealed that he’ll contest the Tour of Flanders for the first time in his career. Valverde triumphed in last season’s Liège-Bastogne-Liège and La Flèche Wallonne, both for the third time. Three time winner Fabian Cancellara will be battling on the cobbles and climbs for the final time.

The men’s race will contain 18-climbs and seven cobbles sections over 256-km. The riders face three passages of the Oude Kwaremont and two of the Paterberg, the final clamber of the former coming with 17-km remaining and the latter with 13-km to go. In the final 45-km there are six hellingen and a section of cobbles. This will made for some exciting attacks.

World Champion Peter Sagan has De Ronde in his sights, as does last year’s podium: Kristoff, Etixx-QuickStep’s Dutchman Niki Terpstra and Greg van Avermaet, BMC’s likely Belgian who is always the bridesmaid and never the bride. New Trek racer Ryder Hesjedal will be keeping his powder dry for the later Ardennes Classics and the Giro d’Italia.
