UCI nixes La Course race for Vuelta a España

Leah Kirchmann

When Vuelta a España race director Javier Guillén revealed some details for the 2015 edition Thursday in Malaga, there was no mention of the organizers’ attempt to hold a one day women’s race on the Grand Tour’s final day in Madrid like La Course by the Tour de France in July. On Friday, the UCI dismissed the idea because of scheduling conflicts with other women’s races.

The Amaury Sport Organization organizes both the Tour and the Vuelta. Dutch dynamo Marianne Vos won the inaugural La Course by the Tour de France with Canadian Leah Kirchmann third.

ASO looked to have La Course by the Vuelta a España on Sept. 13, but the date conflicts with three events across Europe: the Giro de Toscana in Italy from Sept. 11 to 13, the Tour of Belgium from Sept. 10 to 14, and the Grand Prix Montreal and the Chrono Champenois in France, both on Sept. 13.

The idea is not dead; Vuelta organizers will continue to endeavour to persuade the UCI.
