Uphill finish slated for 2015 Vuelta a España’s second day

Although the official race route presentation isn’t until Jan. 10 in Torremolinos, Vuelta a España race director Javier Guillén revealed some details for the 2015 edition Thursday in Malaga. Among the details was the revelation that the second stage would finish on the awe-inspiring Caminito del Rey, a narrow walkway cut into a sheer cliff that has been closed recently for major restorations.

The cycling world knows that the 70th edition will begin on Aug. 22 with a short time trial between Puerto Banús and Marbella, although it’s still unclear whether it’s an individual time trial or the traditional team time trial—seven out of the last 10 opening days have been team chronos.

There will be 10 summit finishes, all of them new. The last rest day falls five days from the finish in Madrid on Sept. 13. In between will be a long, flat time trial which some say came at the joking request of Chris Froome and two days in the mountains.

Three-time and reigning Vuelta champion Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) is concentrating on the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France double in 2015, while Froome is likely to race the Giro and Vuelta. Giro champ Nairo Quintana is saving himself for the Tour de France, which has the least amount of time trialling of the three Grand Tours. Vincenzo Nibali will look to defend his Tour title.
