Watch: Under-23 rider hit by team car in world championship road race

Finish rider struck by team car in the race caravan

During the under-23 world championship road race, a Finish rider was involved in a frightening incident when he was struck by a team car.

The rider involved was 22-year-old Joni Kanerva who was in the race caravan off the back of the peloton when a team car swung out and hit him.

On one of the Bergen courses descents, the Irish team car stopped abruptly when one of their riders was spotted on the side of the road holding up his wheel. Instead of slowing up, the car behind pulled out hitting Kanerva as they accelerated around the slowed Irish team car.

Kanerva went down very hard while the car that hit the rider seemingly accelerated following the collision. According to his team, Kanerva was transported by ambulance to the hospital where he is reportedly in stable condition despite suffering cuts to the face, bruised ribs and a collarbone fracture.

“The matter is with the police that will carry out further investigations and we have been informed by Haukeland [University Hospital] that it was serious,” said Bergen press officer Toril Berle Schalck.
