Tom Dumoulin took his first Grand Tour victory at the 100th Giro d’Italia on Sunday as the race wrapped up in Milan. It was the first Giro d’Italia win by a Dutchman and came in nail-biting fashion in the races final Stage 21 time trial.

“It’s really crazy. I’ve won the Giro! It was such a nerve wrecking day. I needed to stay calm and I almost couldn’t,” Dumoulin said about the emotional day that leading into his race winning ride.

“Luckily I had good legs and I just went for it. I didn’t want to know the time splits. My sport director was only supposed to tell me when to stop taking risks and he did it at half way already,” Dumoulin said about his strategy for the 29 km individual time trial.

The victory was not assured however until race leader Nairo Quintana ran out of time to defend the Magalia Rosa. “When I crossed the line he told me I had won but when I looked at the TV screen I saw I only had three seconds lead and I panicked a bit. I was angry but eventually I pulled it off and I’m super happy,” Dumoulin said about the nerves waiting for the final result to be confirmed.

The win was also a breakthrough for the German registered Team Sunweb taking the organization’s first Grand Tour overall victory having in previous years focused on stage wins.

Dumoulin’s win was not the only result that will have Dutch cycling fans celebrating as Jos van Emden took his maden Grand Tour stage victory with a very strong time trial.
“It’s unbelievable. I’m so happy and so emotional. I’ve come second in time trials too many times,” van Emdem said. “This is the greatness of cycling. Finally I’ve won and it’s a big one.”

He went on to explain the significance of the day for his home nation. “There are two really happy people here from the Netherlands. Yesterday I sent a message to Tom Dumoulin with the Maglia Rosa and he replied he’d hope we’d both be celebrating today and we are.”
