Will Routley wins Stage 4 of the Tour of California

After spending the day out in the breakaway, Will Routley (Optum presented by Kelly Benefit Strategies) and his fellow escapees made it to the end of the stage ahead of the bunch. Even after hunting all the KOM points on the fourth stage of the Tour of California, Routley had the legs to take the win. Gregory Daniel and Kevin De Mesmaeker were second and third, respectively.

After spending the day out in the breakaway that had started 16 km into the stage, Will Routley (Optum presented by Kelly Benefit Strategies) and his fellow escapees made it to the finish ahead of the bunch. Even after hunting down all of the KOM points on the fourth stage of the Amgen Tour of California, Routley had the legs to take the win. Gregory Daniel (U.S.A./Bissell Development Team) and Kevin De Mesmaeker (Belgium/Novo Nordisk) were second and third, respectively.

“Things worked out a little better than planned,” said Routley. “I’ve been feeling really good sprinting at the top of climbs the past three days. I came here to win a stage, that’s what I’ve wanted to do every time I’ve come to the Amgen Tour of California. I wasn’t expecting today was going to be that day. It’s a bit of dream right now.”

Routley’s 165-km ride from Monterey to Cambria also helped him rack up enough points to take the sprint leader jersey from Mark Cavendish (Great Britain/Omega Pharma-QuickStep). Since Routley can’t wear both the polka dot king of  mountains jersey and the green sprint jersey in the next stage, the KOM jersey will go to Jonathan Clarke (Australia/UnitedHealthcare)

The ability of the six breakaway riders to keep away ruined the chances of the sprinters to make anything of the stage. The fast men came in more than a minute after the break. Cavendish was the first of the sprinters ahead of Peter Sagan (Slovakia/Cannondale) and Matthew Harley Goss (Australia/Orica-GreenEdge). Sagan’s teammate, Guillaume Boivin of Montreal, came in 15th. The race’s third Canadian, Ryan Anderson (Optum presented by Kelly Benefit Strategies), finished 63rd.

The top three places of the general classification remained unchanged at the end of the stage with Bradley Wiggins (Great Britain/Sky Pro Cycling) leading the Tour of California, Stage 3 winner Rohan Dennis in second and (Australia/Garmin-Sharp) and Tiago Machado (Portugal/NetApp-Endura) in third. Anderson is the top-placed Canadian in 81st place.  Boivin is in 86th; Routley, 115th.
