Cyclists who live in cities and are members of Zipcar will welcome the news that the car sharing company has committed to supplying roof rack equipped rentals in 17 North American markets. Rack and cargo manufacturer Yakima and Zipcar have teamed up to provide urbanites a hassle free way to get their outdoor adventure gear out of the city.

The racks will be adjustable and be able to hold two bikes, six skis, four snowboards, two surfboards or paddleboards allowing outdoor adventures to have a wide selection of gear they will more easily be able to transport. The racks use the StreamLine base rack system paired with FrontLoader bike mounts.

Racks can often be expensive and installation on a rental comes with risks of damage if not done properly. Packing up a bike to fit into a car is also a hassle with racks being much more preferable. High-quality racks can set you back hundreds of dollars so an already equipped option will allow cyclists to load up and get out of the city faster.

With the partnership, people who enjoy outdoor activities and own cumbersome gear can continue to live car-free in their day-to-day lives without compromising their freedom to load up and enjoy their favourite activities out of the city. According to the Outdoor Industry Association’s ConsumerVue research, 34 percent of the outdoor consumer market lives in cities.

“Zipcar gives our members the freedom to get out and do what they love,” said Zipcar vice president of marketing Andrew Daley. “From ordinary adventures to extraordinary experiences – out to the mountains for a weekend trip with friends, or a day spent surfing at a secluded beach – our partnership with Yakima gives Zipsters more opportunities to engage in the active lifestyles they love, whether that’s biking, skiing, surfing or stand-up paddle boarding.”

In Canada, it will be Hyundai Elantra models that will be equipped with the racks while in the U.S. Zipcar customers will have the option between a Subaru Impreza or a Subaru XV Crosstrek. To reserve Zipcars with Yakima racks, members of the service can select a car model with the Yakima logo next to it. Rental rates will continue to vary according to use.
