Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope left a lasting legacy in the hearts and minds of Canadians. To commemorate the 36th anniversary of the run, the Terry Fox Foundation led by Terry’s younger brother Darrell will host a fundraising ride on September 2 that will cover 360-km from Sun Peaks Resort, B.C. to Mount Terry Fox in Valemount, B.C.

In 2015, Darrell decided to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Terry Fox’s run with a spur of the moment 350-km single day ride along with five others. Darrell got hooked on road cycling after beginning to feel the wear on his knees from running. The ride, which took the group just over 11-hours and can been seen on Strava took the riders from Kamloops, B.C. to Mount Terry Fox. “I wanted to stop many times, but kept reminding myself of what it must have been like for Terry Fox to run the equivalent of two marathons every day,” said Simon Blythe, one of the participants in the inaugural ride.

In 2016, the organization hopes to attract a bigger group of competitive and endurance riders to participate and fundraise for the ride. In 2015, the group stopped every 35-km to refuel and briefly remember Terry Fox’ words. In 2016, to go along with the 36th-anniversary participants will be able to refuel every 36-km and there will be neutral support vehicles.

On September 4, two days after the ride the second Mount Terry Fox Trek will take place in Valemount.
