Australia report: Ewan repeats, Wild takes Stage 2 of Santos Women’s Tour

Spratt keeps leader's jersey

Caleb Ewan (Australia/Orica-Scott) beat out Bora-Hansgrohe duo Sam Bennett (Ireland) and Peter Sagan (Slovakia) to take his second consecutive People’s Choice Classic in Adelaide on Sunday. Earlier on the same course in the East End, Kirstin Wild (The Netherlands/Cylance Pro Cycling) nipped her Italian teammate Rachele Barbieri for the criterium victory in the Santos Women’s Tour.

The women’s criterium came before the People’s Choice. The field had 14-laps of a fast 2.3-km circuit to roll. There was plenty of attacking with sprint and bonus seconds offered on laps four, eight and twelve. The respective winners of those primes were Chloe Hosking (Australia/Alé Cipollini), Lauren Kitchen (Australia/NSWIS Sydney Uni) and Dani King (Great Britain/Cylance). No breakaway lasted long on Sunday.

When it came to the final sprint, Wild and Barbieri survived a confused lead-out to take the 1-2. Orica-Scott’s Amanda Spratt, who won handily on Saturday, retains the ochre leader’s jersey, while third-place Hosking takes the sprint jersey. Action continues Monday with a 92.4-kilometre road stage from Tanunda to Lyndoch that takes in two ascents of the Whispering Wall.

In the People’s Choice Classic, the traditional warm-up race before Tuesday’s start to the Tour Down Under, the men had 22-laps to ride. Ben O’Connor (Australia/Dimension Data) at first had partners for his early breakaway before going solo. In the final five laps the young rider began to tire and then sat up.

At that point Orica-Scott took over, with even Esteban Chaves (Colombia) doing the yeoman’s work. But it was new German signing Roger Kluge, a IAM Cycling refugee, who delivered Ewan to the line. The Bora-Hansgrohe duo lacked cohesion in the final 400-metres. Ewan, the new national criterium champion, delivered the goods.
