Giuseppe Fonzi was the maglia nera, the last rider in the general classification and thus the first to start the final stages individual time trial. He showed up in a black leather jacket giving a fun and light-hearted nod to Arthur “The Fonz” Fonzarelli a character from the U.S sitcom Happy Days. Though he didn’t start the race in the jacket, he deserved a nod for riding 5 hours 48 minutes and 40 seconds more than general classification winner Tom Dumoulin.

Dumoulin made history winning the 100th Giro. It was the Dutchman’s first Grand Tour victory and the first time a Dutch rider won the Italian Grand Tour. The margin by which he did so was narrow. The top 3 riders separated by only 40 seconds. He leapfrogged three rides on the final stage to win the overall.
Meanwhile, Fernando Gaviria was the race’s winningest rider with four stage wins in the first Grand Tour. Mikel Landa handily won the climbing classification.
