Tory Nyhaug seeded 18th after Rio BMX qualifying round

Sole Canadian faces off against reigning champion Thursday

Canadian Tory Nyhaug, the sole national representative, time trialed to 18th place in Wednesday’s seeding round in Rio.

Each rider raced the course individually. Nyhaug rolled the beautiful, challenging track in 35.422, while the World Champion Joris Daudet will be top seeded with 34.617. Defending Olympic Games champion Maris Strombergs of Latvia was seventh.

In the women’s seeding run, defending champion Mariana Pajón (Colombia) had the fastest time of 34.508.

Thursday, the 32 men and 16 women will contest the three-run quarter-finals stage, with the winners advancing to a three-run semi-finals phase to qualify for the one-run medals race. Points will be earned on placings, with first receiving one point, second two, and so forth. After three runs, the four riders with the least amount of points advance to the next round.

Stromberg and Nyhaug are in Thursday’s Heat 2 with six other riders.
