Watch: Cyclist left hanging above a 30-ft drop after incredible save

Racer narrowly avoids long fall into ravine after a crash

The final sprint at the Santa Barbara Road Race was a real nail bitter, especially for a cyclist sprinting for minor placings. On first pass of onboard camera footage from mid-pack in the sprint shows a pile up with one cyclist faulting up in the air. You have to look at the rear facing camera to catch the cyclist in blue who was further back but didn’t have a chance to avoid the pile-up.

Mike Allec, the team manager of the Carefast/Storck Cycling Team, hit the fallen cyclists and rolls on his back onto the guardrail. His bike follows him and falls off the bridge. Allec had the instinct of reaching out and as he rolls over onto his stomach is able to take hold of the ledge leaving him dangling off the 30 ft bridge.

His team released a statement on Sunday saying that Allec was okay and showed a picture of his bike which fell off the bridge.

This weekend at the Santa Barbara Road Race our team rider and manager Mike Allec was involved in a spectacular crash in the final sprint that left him hanging off of a bridge above a ravine (30ft below). We are very thankful for the outpouring support from many who were there and more importantly those that helped him off of the bridge.

Words cannot express the gratitude for him being able to walk away from this with road rash, this could have ended much much worse.

Allec was able to narrowly avoid falling off the bridge. Our only question is why was a final sprint taking place on a bridge?
