Interview with Ruben Zepuntke before Stage 4 of the 2014 Tour of Alberta

Canadian Cycling Magazine correspondent Joanne Elves spoke with Ruben Zepuntke before Stage 4 of the 2014 Tour of Alberta. The German rider of team Bissell Development won Stage 1 of the Tour in Lethbridge. He admitted that he liked the hard, rain-soaked, circuit stage up and down the Oldman River Valley. While the Tour of Alberta features the Prairies, Zepuntke noted a European flavour. “It’s like a Dutch race: windy, small roads, lots of changes in direction in the race.”

Zepuntke also spoke about the pride he has for his team. The Division 3 outfit showed that it could tangle with the WorldTour riders by riding and the front and splitting the pack.

Stage 4 featured “Canadian pavé” or gravel sectors. Zepuntke’s plan was to stay up at the front.

After the Tour of Alberta, Zepuntke planned to head back to Germany to prepare for the world road cycling championships in Spain. The miles he put in in Canada were also preparation for his race for the rainbow jersey.
